If you didn’t know, we donate 50% of our profits each year to ensure that everyone has access to clean water and a toilet within our lifetime. Here are questions some people have about our donation model.

Where does 50% of the profits donated each year actually go?

The 50% of the profits we donate go to our water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) impact partners via our foundation, who do the incredible work of giving access to clean water and toilets for the billions of people in need.

The donation is made to our foundation within six months after the end of our financial year (30 June) and is distributed to our valued impact partners from there.

Donating 50% of your profits is huge, but why not 100%?

To reach our goal and ensure everyone has access to clean water and sanitation in our lifetime, we’ll need to donate a lot of money. Like a lot more than what we’re able to right now. That’s why we use almost all of the rest of the 50% of profits as an investment in growing the company. The bigger we grow, the greater our profits and the bigger our impact. It may be counterintuitive, but we believe that donating a portion of our profits right now will result in much bigger donations in the long term.

How can we be sure you are actually donating 50% of your profits?

Our external accountants and tax agent, Pitcher Partners, verify this every year and you can find the latest verification here. We typically absorb the fees (e.g., foreign exchange) that would be charged to our impact partners.

On your impact page, I saw that you raised a certain amount of money. How is that different from money that was donated?

Outside of the donation that we make as part of our “50% of profits donated” commitment, we also help facilitate donations to our foundation from special fundraising initiatives and other businesses and individuals that are inspired by our vision. Therefore, the money raised accounts for 50% of the profits we donate + additional donations we help facilitate to our foundation.

To date, we have raised AUD $20,887,791, of which AUD $20,045,691 is the cumulative total from our 50% donation model and AUD $842,101 is from the additional donations to our foundation that we've helped to make possible.

How do you calculate the number of people helped?

This is calculated by adding the highest number of people reached by water, sanitation, and hygiene by each partner. This gives us the most accurate picture of our partners' impact while minimising double-counting of individuals and inflating numbers
