We are excited to announce that as of 2020 September, all of our shipping is completely carbon neutral – from our factories, all the way to your doorstep!
We’re partnering with an organisation called Pachama to buy carbon offsets that protect old growth rainforest in the Peruvian Amazon through a very cool project called the Brazil Nut Concession Forest Conservation Project.
To calculate our total shipping emissions, we teamed up with the experts at Edge Environment to undertake a detailed Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), which included a thorough assessment of all of our transport. They calculated the total distance travelled by road, sea and rail undertaken by all of our orders, and the total tonnage of products shipped. From there, they use an ‘emissions factor’ for each component of the journey and were able to estimate the total carbon emitted by our transport.
We’ve then taken this figure and purchased an equivalent quantity of high quality carbon offsets, plus an added safety margin to be extra conservative. We’ve committed to doing this on a rolling basis to ensure that our shipping is always 100% carbon neutral. Neat!
We are really proud to be investing in carbon offsets and this is only the very beginning of our carbon strategy, not the end! We will be looking at what a really scientific, sophisticated, smart supply chain strategy could be for our organisation, which will take a number of years to get to, so this is an (VERY) exciting first step.
